Eventually, Goldstein spoke to Ford and sold him on the role
When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel , and Bill Lawrence were asked how they got Harrison Ford on the show, Segel said that Goldstein originally wanted a "Harrison Ford type," and was going to audition with people like Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they had to at least bring it up to Ford first, thinking he would immediately turn it down, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford was being brought on board, which sparked interest from other notable actors.

Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince him, but he was excited nonetheless. I’ve watched the first two episodes and I find them compelling.
I also respect the way it’s presented – he’s not doing something that other therapists should be doing, and that’s pretty clear
Part of the reason is that I found there to be something grounded in reality about a therapist who needs therapy and wants to break into his patients, to suddenly break out of his own problems. It hasn’t gotten to the silly situations of other shows like Loot, but it’s still early in the series, and I’ll keep watching it.
The show isn’t for everyone
That said, I enjoy the depth of the characters, who don’t seem like caricatures; they’re people I’m interested in getting to know.
